Woodford vs Bury St Edmunds

Powerful Woodford break losing run to deny Bury

Woodford 24 - Bury St Edmunds 10

Woodford sealed victory at the Highams against a strong Bury St Edmunds side with a superb defensive display.

Woodford dominated the first half, controlling the collision area and lineout. It was only a matter of time before Woodford were to register their first score. A classic catch and drive from the lineout was almost sacked by the Bury side but Woodford were quick to regroup to help Robbie Connell sneak over the line. The conversion was missed but Woodford had laid the gauntlet down to the visitors.

Bury came back strongly looking for a score but the Woodford defence held firm and some big hits from Niall Moody in particular saw the Bury side put back behind the gain line.

It was not long before Woodford were to extend their lead – this time some quick hands enabled winger Duffy to cruise over for his first try of the season. Again the conversion was missed.

Repeated offences from the Bury second row resulted in him spending ten minutes in the bin. Woodford took this opportunity to further extend their lead. This time it was the quick thinking Nick Williams who scampered over following a swiftly taken penalty. Huw Levis had by now found his range and added the extras from out wide to give the Highams men a 17 – 0 lead at the break.

The second half was a fragmented affair – a suspected broken leg to one of the Bury players had to be dealt with in the proper manner and so the game took a ten minute break to wait for him to be stretchered off. I understand that the player did not break his leg but Woodford wish him all the best in his recovery.

Bury attacked and were awarded a penalty which was converted. However, Woodford remained in control and scored again through Ed Gooday – his drive for the line was too strong to be held up. Again Huw Levis converted to leave Woodford leading 24 – 3 with ten minutes to play. Full credit to Bury who did not give up and showed great determination to finally break the Woodford defence – the converted try in the final minute of play gave the visitors a consolation try they deserved.

Stand in Skipper Eleftheriou said ‘I was pleased with the performance – Bury are a physical side and to keep them out until the last minute proved our defensive capabilities. Although it may not been the most fluid display, the work rate in both attack and defence was outstanding.

Next week Woodford travel to Clifton in the National Cup.
